unpainting private residence new york, ny august 2006
in a really nice living room in a dream townhouse which was nevertheless about to be rennovated, i was given carte blanche to do "whatever i wanted" while the owner was on vacation.
picking a room, sifting through germs of projects, making a "painting" or an immersive theater event - one decision after another led to this piece.
i scraped the paint off of a large section of wall. that process was filmed. i edited myself out and ended up with still frames of the paint disappearing; added that reversed, that gave me simulated paint re-applying itself to the wall. multiple layers, random starting and stopping points at variable times in that process, dynamic transparency, computer-processed and projected back onto the naked wall.
the finished piece, then, is composed of a projection of paint being scraped and re-appearing on a naked section of wall where the paint has been scratched away. it is always changing, always looks different.
