convergence 2000: art, multiplicity, and the millennium
the times square lobby gallery

july-september 2000

everyday last-millennial objects (e.g., fax toner cartridge) nailed to constructions of wood, and painted so that every line where two planes meet in three dimensions is extended and defines a two-dimensional area of color.

remember y2k and the imminent potential end of civilization? and thinking what would be left if everything electronic stopped working? and being partially-obsessed with ancient religious art?

some of the most powerful art we can see is mysterious, ancient artifacts unearthed about which we know very little, perhaps functional things which have lost their original purpose and we apply an aesthetic value to as we gaze at them and perceive their beauty, guess at how they were made, and try to imagine what they might have been used for. i was intrigued with the mystique which comes out of viewing something inexplicable from another time and another culture, and the thought that many things we see everyday would simply be unrecognizable in a different context.
